Government and private job adverts often set an age limit "as on the closing date". In Pakistan, adverts from bodies such as FPSC, PPSC and SPSC usually state a minimum and maximum age, and your age is measured on the last date for applications, not on the day you apply.
To check whether you qualify, enter your date of birth and set Calculate age as of to the closing date in the advert. The result shows your exact age on that day. If you are close to a limit, look at the months and days as well as the years, and check exactly how the advert words its age limit.
Many adverts also allow age relaxation for certain groups, such as government employees or applicants from particular regions. Those rules vary from advert to advert, so read the advert itself before you apply.
How exact age is calculated
Dividing the total number of days by 365.25 gives a figure that is close but not exact. Months have different lengths and February changes from year to year, so calendar age cannot be worked out by division alone.
The correct method counts whole years first, then whole months, then the remaining days. When the day of the month in the second date is smaller than in the date of birth, the calculation borrows days from the previous month. That is why someone born on 31 March and measured on 30 April is shown as 30 days older, not as a fraction of a month.
Birthdays on 29 February
Someone born on a leap day only has a calendar birthday once every four years, and there is no single agreed rule for when they turn a year older.
This calculator follows the most common practice and treats 1 March as the birthday in non-leap years. Some legal systems use 28 February instead, which can matter for age limits, retirement and other legal thresholds. If the exact date has legal consequences, check the rule that applies where you live.
Not every culture counts age the same way
The international convention counts completed years, so a newborn baby is zero years old. That is the system this calculator uses.
Traditional East Asian reckoning worked differently. A baby counted as one year old at birth, and everyone gained a year at the lunar new year rather than on their birthday. South Korea used a version of this system in daily life until a 2023 law made the international system the official standard, although the older count is still heard socially.
When total days are more useful than years
The total number of days is the figure that matters in several situations. Doctors track babies in days and weeks, because a month is too long a unit for a fast-growing infant. Visa and residency rules often count days spent in a country. Some legal deadlines also run for a set number of days from an event.
You can also set the second date in the future. The result then shows how old you will be on that date, which is the quickest way to check whether you will meet an age requirement by a certain deadline.
