Where you will need your total experience
Job adverts often ask for a minimum number of years of experience, and application forms ask you to state your total. Immigration and skilled worker visa applications, professional body registrations and some scholarships ask for the same figure, often with the dates of each job listed separately.
Working it out by hand is easy to get wrong when you have had several jobs, especially if some overlapped. This calculator gives you one total that you can quote with confidence, plus a list of every job with its dates.
How the total is counted
Each job counts both its first day and its last, because you worked on both. A job from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2022 is exactly three years, not three years minus a day.
Whole months are counted first, then the remaining days. If the start day does not exist in the end month, such as the 31st in February, the calculation uses the last day of that month instead of moving into the next one.
Overlapping jobs
If two jobs overlap, for example because you had a part-time contract alongside your main job, the overlapping time is only counted once. Employers almost always want the total time you have been working, not the sum of every contract.
When the calculator finds an overlap, the results show how many days were removed, so the adjustment is always visible. If you need the plain sum instead, the downloaded file lists each job separately with its own duration.
Gaps between jobs
Any time between the end of one job and the start of the next is shown as a gap. It helps to know your gaps before an interview, because interviewers often ask about them. Some visa and professional registration forms also ask you to explain any gap longer than a few months.
What the download contains
The CSV file opens in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice with a double click. It lists every job with its title, dates and duration in years, months and days, followed by the combined total on the last row. You can copy it straight into a CV or an application form.
