Zakat calculator

Add up what you own, take off what you owe and check the total against the nisab. If it is above, Zakat is 2.5% of it. Gold and silver can be entered by weight in tola or grams with today's rate, and you can choose a silver or gold nisab.

Uses the standard 2.5% rate and the silver or gold nisab, explained below. Calculations run in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server. Not a fatwa.

How to use this calculator

  1. Add what you own on the day your Zakat year completes: cash at home, bank balances, gold and silver, business stock at sale value, money others owe you and investments.
  2. Enter gold and silver by weight in tola or grams, with today's rate per tola. One tola is 11.664 grams.
  3. Deduct debts and bills that are due now, and any Zakat your bank already deducted.
  4. Choose the nisab. Silver gives a lower threshold, so more people pay; gold gives a higher one. Many scholars in Pakistan recommend the silver nisab because it is better for those who receive Zakat.

How Zakat is worked out

Add up everything zakatable and subtract what you owe right now. That is your net wealth. If it is at or above the nisab, Zakat is one fortieth of it:

Zakat = (total wealth − debts due) × 2.5%

If the net figure is below the nisab, no Zakat is due on it this year.

The nisab

The nisab is the minimum wealth on which Zakat becomes due. It is set by weight of metal, so its value in money changes with the market:

  • Silver nisab: 52.5 tola, which is 612.36 grams.
  • Gold nisab: 7.5 tola, which is 87.48 grams.

Because silver is far cheaper than gold, the silver nisab is a much lower amount of money. Enter today's rate per tola and the calculator converts the nisab into your currency.

What counts and what does not

Counts: cash, bank balances, gold and silver in any form (including jewellery, by most Hanafi scholars), stock held for sale, money lent that you expect back, shares and funds and savings certificates.

Does not count: the house you live in, your car, furniture, clothes, tools of your trade and other things for personal use. Property bought to sell counts at its value; property you rent out counts only through the rent you have saved.

Debts reduce your Zakat only for the amount due now, such as this month's installment and unpaid bills. A long-term loan is not deducted in full.

Zakat deducted by banks in Pakistan

Banks in Pakistan deduct Zakat at source from savings and some deposit accounts on the first of Ramadan, unless the account holder has filed an exemption declaration. If that happened, enter the amount so it is not paid twice.

Not a fatwa. Schools of thought differ on details such as jewellery, debts and which nisab to use. This calculator does the arithmetic on the figures you enter. For your own situation, ask a scholar you trust.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Zakat?

Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth, once that wealth is at or above the nisab and has been held for a lunar year.

What is the nisab for Zakat?

52.5 tola (612.36 g) of silver or 7.5 tola (87.48 g) of gold. Its value in rupees or any currency depends on that day's metal rate, so it changes over time.

Should I use the silver or gold nisab?

Many scholars in Pakistan and South Asia recommend the silver nisab because it is lower and therefore benefits more people in need. Others use gold, especially where wealth is held mainly in gold. Follow the view of a scholar you trust.

Is Zakat due on gold jewellery?

In the Hanafi school, followed by most people in Pakistan, Zakat is due on gold and silver jewellery, worn or not. Other schools exempt jewellery in regular use. Enter it if your school counts it.

Can I deduct loans from Zakat?

You can deduct debts that are due now, such as this month's installment and unpaid bills. The whole outstanding balance of a long-term loan is not deducted.

How many grams is one tola?

One tola is 11.664 grams. So 7.5 tola of gold is 87.48 grams and 52.5 tola of silver is 612.36 grams.
